How long does it take to "plink" 250 rounds?

Two of the grand sons came for a visit yesterday (two days off school for some reason) and asked if they could target practice with the .22. (they are 11 and 13)

I set them up on my target range (shooting into the pond dam) and some tin cans and gave them a can of 250 rounds. that was around 1 in the afternoon. By 4 or there abouts they came in saying they were out of ammo.

I'm thinking I'll pick up a cheap single shot instead of letting them use the semi-auto next time!

Still, at about four cents a round it's cheap entertainment so I can't complain too much.

10 bucks for a full afternoon of entertainment is pretty cheap.

the part that takes longest is loading the plinking goes faster, black powder would slow them down some

Oh, as an FYI: They did manage to kill every wild tin can in sight.

Not only that, they spent a quality afternoon with Granpa learning some shooting skills.

It took 'em about 1 1/2 hours too long ... ask my 13 year old how I know

We've burned almost 300 rounds in 2 hours before. Didn't even realize it really, but we were goofin' around bulleye shooting one handed and then speed shooting. The kid can almost out shoot me if I don't pay attention.

Let's see here...

- 1pm to 4pm = 3 hours
- 3 hours / 250 rounds = about 43 seconds/round

Soooo.... What took them so long?

Well I went to the range yesterday shot 6 mags out of the 45 and was out of there in a 1/2 hour or so. Oh and 2 mags out of the .380

Actually, this was the first time I left them alone. I wanted to see if they would remember and USE all the safety guides I've taught and let them have some time without direct supervision. Well that's what they thought, I've got a very good set of binoculars.

And before anyone goes off the deep end about guns and kids, I was hunting, often by myself orwith my younger brother by the time I was 13. There are somethings a country kid learns at a much younger age than city kids and when my grandkids come to the country grandpa does all he can to pass that along. And yes, mom and dad are all for it. Their mom, my daughter, was hunting with me before she was 12.

You're doing a fine job there Bubba. Keep them as long as you can. My Grandson is going on 17 this coming March and it's no longer fun to hang with Granpa with him now. Thats ok as he needs to grow up and become his own person. But I sure miss what you described with your two younguns.

My grandsons are 8 and 10, and the 10 year old, knows more about guns then I do. I bought him ( the 10 year old) a Henry 22 last year for Xmas, and he always shows me the sales on bullets (hint, hint). Between him, and his bother, I bet, I have bought over 5000 rounds. I know his dad buys alot too. This Xmas I will be getting the 8 year old one. He keeps the gun in like new condition. Hes also a better shot then PaPa too.

Bubba, my nephew goes through 22 like a small Army goes through 223, I think they are doing a great job!

I mean it amazes my son how fast he goes through it, thankfully he is 18 and purchases his own now, he wants a bigger gun but we keep telling him he better get a promotion delivering news papers isn't going to keep a 30-06 fed very long!!

As long as they keep up with the safety, they're learning a important lessons of responsibility and possibly learn about responsible game and wildland management. You think they're going through ammo now, wait until they get bit by the "competition curse" and start doing drills at least once a week. Heck, I went through 250 rounds of 9mm in just two hours this afternoon.

Sure you can but its gonna take alot more than 250 rounds. Beside that I`m sure he has taught them how to keep it clean as well.
I have a Stevens single shot 20ga here that has no choke left in the barrel, it was my first shotgun. Man if that thing could talk, all those days of sneaking through the woods after squirrels, and partridge. Alot of good memories every time I look at the ole girl.

I dunno' - but I'm trying really hard with my Ruger Mark III. I've got at least 3,000 rounds through that gun in the last 4 years.

Forgive me I'm Canadian, but are you sure that putting a 22 in the hands of an 11 & 13 year old is smart. And please don't give me the right to bear arms thing.

I'm not trying to start anything , I'm just concerned about children having guns.

I'm Canadian, too.....but am not asking anyone's forgiveness for that....actually, I'm very proud of it.

In my experience, anytime someone leads off with "I'm not trying to start anything...." something is just about to start.

The earlier you can teach kids about gun safety the more responsible they will be. Many of us have been turned loose with firearms for hunting purposes at that age or younger. If it weren't for my dad and uncle hunting by themselves at that age they wouldn't have had much meat to eat.

Teaching kids to use guns at an early age will not make them want to shoot other people, but not teaching them about guns can lead to accidents when they see a gun, they're fascinated by it, and don't know how to handle it.
