How important is it?

My 2000 115hp 2 stroke is missing the vent valve and cap from the top of the engine mounted oil tank. What does the valve do and should it be replaced? Also, the oil fill spout leaks oil down over the air box when the engine is raised. The O ring on the cap seems to be OK. Would the missing vent valve have any effect on the leaking oil? TIA

Think about what you said. If the valve is to vent the oil tank so that it won't develop a vacuum, then it's open to the atmosphere but being a valve, it closes when the tank is full enough to leak out when you raise the engine. Sooooooo. On the Oring, mine leaked when I bought my 90 and even though the oring looked good it wasn't. When you buy your new cap ensure you get an oring with it.

I was questioning the need to replace it. As it is now, the tank vents through the hole where the valve would be. Seems counter intuitive to plug the hole (with the valve) and thereby restrict gravity flow of oil to the pump. Hoping that I can buy a new Oring for the cap without buying the whole cap. Thanks for the input.

I have an older version of your motor and my vent inn the cap quit working. That made the oil tank collapse. All I did was drill a small hole in the top rear of the tank to let air in. It's been working fine like that for over 10 years.

I would say go with it as is. Only thing to watch out for is oil leak out if you tilt all the way up. That's why I put the air hole in the rear area.

Re: How important is it?

I've had the motor for 5 years and didn't even know that there was supposed to be a valve and cap over the vent hole. I saw it on a parts diagram while researching another issue. I can't say that it's absence has done any harm other than the leaking oil fill cap when the motor is raised full up. Thanks for the input.
