1975 Rude 50 hp, we put a thermo temp gauge ( kinda like the IR kind the A/C guys use ) pointed it at the stator after about 5 min on normal run time in the tank and it read 230 deg......I think that's way to hot, but anyone else know , why would it run hot ??

What's more important would be the resistance. I only know how this for Mercs. This is in the manual, but not the operating temperature. Go figure. Surely there's a JohhnyRude pro here that can tell you the wires and readings.
You also might get a better response describing the problem you are having (surely you simply weren't curious about the stator temp).

Yeah, why are you taking it's temperature anyway? Of the many, many motors I've worked on, I've never checked stator temp.

But it stands to reason that it would get warm. It is doing work and work creates heat.

probably not, when you consider it is on top of a running block that the tstat is not all the way open till 160.

I found this dried goo on top, I knew it was not oil, it seems that the stator got so hot the rubber coating melted ??? thoughts ??

When the potting material on the stator melts, it is usually because the rectifier has gone bad, fused the diode wires and allowed the battery voltage to reach the charge coils.

Was the charging system working?

Agreed with what was just said. I might add that the early ignition systems of that type (1973) had a problem with ignition charge coils melting even though there was no problem. It was just poor choice of material by the mfr. Those original melty coils were replaced with a stator that was one unit potted in green or blue epoxy, which solved the problem. That is what should be in your motor, unless it has also been replaced. So, who knows what is in there??? Might be an aftermarket unit of poor quality, or....? What you see running down certainly isn't that blue or green epoxy. Time for an inspection before you get stuck miles from the dock.

below in the pic is the stator from the boat, if you look at the black round part on the stator, you can see this is where the goop originated, whats the deal here, I have a new stator ordered, but is there something else to replace as well....COILS ??

That looks like one of the 1973 stators that we had trouble with. I didn't think they were still used on the '75, but I guess I could be mistaken. Or it might have gotten replaced with an older one at some time. Anyway, what you have was not uncommon, and a new one will eliminate the problem.

BTW, most of them didn't last over a couple of years before oozing goo. You did well.
