I know I'd have to buy cables and controls, but how hard is it to remove the tiller arm and all the electronics inside it?

Speaking generically I would think that electronically You would unplug the tiller and plug in the remote setup.
Of course there may be some sort of special plug or adaptor needed.
Mechanically take a look under the cowl.

Amazing to read so many folks swapping from tiller to remote and remote to tiller. If they would get together, everybody could swap theirs over and be happy boaters again. How hard is that to do really depends on the availability of the parts needed for such a swap. Of course there are the electrical issues and wiring but also the mechanical parts as well. If you can find a good break down of your engine (check boats dot net, for a good break down of your engine) you can see what parts would be needed. But you also need the proper control unit for it to work properly as well. Can it be done? That depends on if your engine was available in both configurations from the factory. Other wise you will have to improvise... JMHO!

All the required hardware should come inside the remote control box kit for that 50. Whatever is installed on tiller will remain there, will need to install on center console new functional tach that comes with small light indicators, wires, remote box, cables, engine fittings, etc. That convertion should not take that long as all electrical connectors are plug and play. Mechanical installation could take more time though.

Happy Boating
