Being from WI and only fishing up here in the north my whole life where water may reach 75-80.
What do water temps reach when it's 'cold'?
Can it really be hard to catch fish all year round down south? Never done it, but initially, my answer is, it's gotta be pretty easy.

Hi, Dman.

Like anywhere else and any other time, if you put the right bait or lure in the right place at the right time you catch fish.

Good luck. :)

Depends how far south you want to go.
Down here the winter temperatures can reach 10C up to 20C in the summer for salt water, fresh water freezes and goes up to 20C also!
Fish caught here range from the full gamut of big game fish to the humble trout, coarse fishing not being forgotten.
Come down and try it mate, I'm sure we'll give you a good time..........
Ross

Re: How hard is it to catch fish down south?

Let's take freshwater only and I am gonna use large mouth bass for specifics because they exist in both locations. S/W around here is a year round event weather permitting but you got to change species and tactics to have excelent fishing each season.
I guess it is best to start off by saying that mid January bass are already starting a pre spawn pattern and depending upon the winter can actually start spawning as early as Febuary but usually things start becomming more stable by March. Fishing is good year round here with the actual slack off experienced more in the heat of summer than any other time. Winter water temperatures are in the 50's at the lowest or not much lower if they drop past that. Now all that said fish are fish and at no times should anyone think they are easy because instead of clearly defined seasonal tactics at times you can be catching bass shallow on beds while others have not even thought about leaving deeper water while still others are done spawning. This explains why you can catch fish on the beds from March through May. However, during this time you will also find fish in a pre and post spawn pattern so instead of fishing specific locations sometimes it is better to fish bedding areas in morning and deeper water in the mid day because the bass will tend to more readily hit deeper midday than shallow. Of course not all fish shallow are bedding and we do have some fish who remain shallow year round while others only come up to spawn. I guess what I am trying to say is for much of the south the fishery is year round and not seasonal.
BTW some species are more active in colder water while others warmer and it can be more productive to target use that to your advantage to increase your odds of catching fish. However here year round species specific fishing is possible. We also don't know how to use ice Augers and can't walk on water here pluss a blizard is about 1/4" of snow that melts by lunchtime.

It's not hard to catch fish down here. It's just hard to catch the ones you want when you want to.

Derwood.

Don't know about the fishing down south, but the skeeters must be terrible. I leave Medford and head northwest 500 miles, into Canada, where the skeeters freeze out every couple of days.

That's too bad you don't know how to use an Ice Auger.
10 degrees outside, wind howling about 20 mph, standing on a huge ice cube trying to cut 3-4 ft of ice. Boy, it's great.
It's even better when it rains and there is no snow on the ice. There can be 6 inches of water on top of the ice and driving around in your vehicle. It actually makes your vehicle look like a boat on plane! Looks like you are driving on the water.

Hey Rb2313, check this out.
www.chippewavalleyfishing.com

Dman

Fishing is Fishing, sometimes it is easy and sometimes its not. If it wasn’t that way it would be called catching. LOL :D

I caught some of my biggest fish this year from January to March. I caught a 6+ lbs. large mouth bass with a good 6” of snow on the ground. Hey that is almost a blizzard here. The lakes can get a thin layer of ice on them at times but it doesn’t usually last long.

Catching bass in the winter just requires different tactics than for the summer. Your presentation is usually slower but many times the baits remain the same. During pre-spawn, I like slow rolling spinner baits and fishing jig-n-pigs in deeper water. During spawn, tighten down the drag and hang on, the big fish are moving into the shallow flats. Besides the fall feeding frenzy, this might be the only time the big bass move into the shallow water. Soft plastic baits without weights seem to work good when the fish are on beds.

When things get real slow and everything is froze up, I am hunting ducks and deer. :D

Water 58 degrees man it does not get much lower than that here dead of winter. Heck the water temp is still comfortable for swimming here although has started to chill down a little bit. I just wish this wind would die down because it is hard to cast a fly rod in the wind and I won't even try forcing the canoe agianst it. If I had the big boat up and running I would be out fishing now but it looks like I got to help mom out some with some bills so there goes the extra money agian.

dman - i got a good laff out of visualizing your post about the ice auger! :D i bet the drillin is great fun, and you probably don't even notice when your toes snap off like icicles... i had to turn the heat on the other night when the outside temp got down to 62. somehow i can handle heat with sweat rolling down my back in a steady stream better than cold weather that causes your nose to drip constantly. no way, you can keep your big ice cube. LOL

its really amazing the heat that black bass put up with in the south(usa). they seem happy in 85 degree water. in the shallow swampy lakes where the water is only avg 4 ft or so, you'd think they'd parboil. but it seems the oxygen content is what they go for. on 100+degree days, they'll have their heads stuck right under the thickest lilypad patches where the O2 is highest, and they'll blow up on a weedless spoon moving as fast as you can pull it. they'll be biting if you can stand the heat.

Peter, I know how you feel. I need a new motor for mine, but guess that’s going to have to wait. It never fails, start saving money for something and something comes along and you have to use it for something else. Between the bills and student loans there is not much left for the outboard. I hope to have the boat ready by next spring.

ebb, your right about the bass. Many of the lakes around here are very shallow, 4’ – 15’ deep. Even in the heat of the summer, they will be in four foot or less at times. I love catching them on some form of grass or pads with topwaters like a grass rat. They will explode on it. :D

Re: How hard is it to catch fish down south?

Wintertime(?) is the best fishing , in my opinion , here in Texas. The water temps in the summer get to 90 degrees+, so when the temp drops the fishing turns on. I fish hydroelectric reserviors and the fish congregate near the hot water outlets. Seems like the worse the weather, the better the fishing. The white bass fishing gets going around Xmas-March with limits being a pretty regular thing. Then on to the spring thing, which can be amazing. I generally fish freshwater till June when it is getting hot, then switch to salt. As you can see, fishing here is year round and GREAT!

Water temps are down to 58+/- here. Fishing will start picking up again when the fish start bulking up for winter.
I'll keep you posted.
Anyone want to come up north to do some ice fishing.....I'll gladly show you how to use an ice auger. Drill about 20 holes and you'll be a pro!!
Dman

The fishin gets evan better in the fall right into January when its tough to get offshore, thats in Crystal River (Florida). Up here in Wisconsin I tend to find the fishin best in the spring and fall. All in All the fishin in Wisconsin can't be compared to the fishin capital of the world, Florida.
Dave

That's great that people are doing well. Fishing is tough and even tougher to get the motivation to go out. It was 13 degrees last night. I'm waiting for my new boat to arrive soon. Hopefully I can have it out a few times before the water freezes. The small ponds have a thin layer of ice.
Good fishing.
Dman
