I have always been a Mercury outboard guy but looking to possibly repower my 19ft alum v-hull this summer and a coworker has a 1991 Tohatsu 120HP with all controls that he took off his boat last year. He says the motor ran great but he wanted a 4 stroke so its been sitting in his garage. He claims it was serviced regularly and never had an issue with it but doesnt know how many hours. He's asking $2000. Any thoughts? As I said, I know nothing about these motors or their reliability so Im looking for advise.

The reliability and dependability is as good or better than anything else. The carbed 2-strokes were obsoleted by the EPA, so now the new motors are the TLDI variety... but they are based on the same 2-stroke blocks as your 120. Price sounds a wee bit steep, all things considered... but he may accept a lower offer.

That's high. No more than 1500. The thing is 22 years old and sold for less than 5 grand new...

Thanks guys. Offered him $1200, figuring it gives me some wiggle room, but he has 2 others interested that will be looking at it this weekend so we'll see if he still has it then and I'll offfer $1100 this time
