how fast should a omc 235hp, 5 litre on a 88 19'

just wondering how fast my 88 19' bayliner should go with a 235hp, 5 litre, enigine should be. it goes about 42-44 but i have friends with similar boats with less hp, and they keep up with me, i need to be faster than them, any cheap ideas to make my boat faster, i can't spend too much, but i've heard of, my a device to plane out the boat quicker, but other than that i'm lost i need it to go really fast, thanks, again.

Make sure you have the boat trimmed out good going in a straight line, but be careful in the turns. Trim to high and turn, and prop will spin out and run too many rpms. What rpm's are you running. Should be about 4700 to 5000 I think on that motor. May need more pitch. My friend has a 19 foot VIP with omc 5 liter. Runs about 53-55 with him alone. GL

Just FYI, before our motor went,<br />89 19' grady white tornament with 89 175 Johnson, at 5500 rpms running 45-47. Planing out the boat quicker does nothing for the top end. If it has bottom paint, take it off and give the whole lower unit and hull a good waxing.
