how does weather affect fish?

I have heard different things from different sources about how weather,(fronts, rain, barometric pressure, etc.), affects fish eating patterns, where they hold, etc. If someone could give me some reliable guidance on this subject, it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

A fish's swim bladder must be adjusted to current barometric pressure to control buoyancy. Water temp and oxygen content must have a lot to do with a fish's sense of well-being.

How that affects the fish's behavior has been in dispute for as long as astrology has been used to try to explain human behavior.

All I can say is I have had the best luck fishing on partly cloudy days. It seems the sun attracts them to the lure and a passing cloud makes them bite it. I can be having a crappy day on the water and the second a could passes I have one on.

The other stuff, weather men can't even predict the weather with multi-billion dollar supercomputers. I won't even try to read a fish's mind.

Who ever figures out the answer to that question is gonna be one rich fishing guru.
For me, and I have zero scientific evidence to back this up I like fishing a falling barometer. The faster it falls, the faster my luck seems to be.
I dislike fishing a north wind just after a cold front, always seems to give lockjaw.
All that said I have done good on supposedly bad days and vice versa.
The best weather to fish in is whatever it's like out there whenever you can go.
Good luck, guessing is part of what keeps us at it.

Fishing a falling barometer , as a storm front is moving in , can be extremely productive . Cloudy/ partly cloudy days and the fish are usually shallower and less spooky , especially with a little chop on the water .

Fishing right after a big downpour can be very productive also , as the sudden increase in flow carries all manner of food to hungry fish .

But the best rule about fishing and weather is this :
The 2 best times to fish are when its raining , and , when it ain't ! :D

Just the obvious here but this is what I do:

Fish early in the morning before dawn until about 11am--ish. During the afternoon when the heat is out and everybody is on the lake I pull tubes or lounge because production go down immensely most of the time.

Than when evening starts to come around, it is on! If you have lights (legal in SD) than fishing tends to be good until the next afternoon.

I also tend to have more luck on cloudy days, and annoying as it is windy and choppy days tend to work in my favor as well.

And again as others have said after a rain is a good time.

I don't have the weather thing figured out. I never do well after a stormy night or rain the prior day. But even on the "bad" days I get surprised.

Last summer I was on Carmi all day the day after the tornado went through Bakersfield and only caught a few walleye: I caught a few "slots" and then the teenager I brought with me caught a 27"+/- monster about 2pm. He hollered he was stuck on the bottom. I looked at the rod and said "no you're not!" It ran on him real hard four times before it started to tire, and was still pulling pretty well when I finally netted it for him.

I will say that the "Solunar Tables" reflect actual experiences, however. They don't predict them though.

Every very good fishing day last summer was marked as a good fishing day on the Tables. But some low-fish days were marked as good fishing days on the tables. We didn't have an fantastic days on non-marked days, but usually caught fish.

My church sponsored a kids fishing derby at a lake last June. Me and my fishing buddy were two of the eight volunteers who brought boats. We thought we would be so smart , and went in on Thursday and "pre-fished" the lake. We caught well over 20 nice rainbows in two hours and several smallmouth. We were going to get the kids in our boats to win! Riiiiight... Heavy winds and rain on Friday- Saturday cool and clear. Not a single boat caught a single trout!:(

Thank God for bluegills; the kids had fun! LOL now but irritated that day...

That's what I think of fishing after a weather front.

You might try this link, it has some real good info. It's called the Bass Fishing Resource Guide. I think the address is www.bassresource.com. I have it saved to my favorites and since I'm not a super savy computer guy, when I tried to get you the link, it kicked me off of here. I hope you find it because there are some great articles there.
