how does a speedo work????

i have a 89 sun tracker pontoon and the speedo doesnt work but i have no idea how its supposed to work to even see whats wrong. there are 2 transponders on the end of one of the toons but i think they are for the fishfinder but im not sure

Speedos are driven by water pressure, either from a pitot tube

or from a pitot tube built into the outboard's lower unit. They often get a little piece of debris in the intake that blocks the intake. Look for a tiny hole in the front edge of your lower unit. Run a small wire in it to push out any debris. Should get it working again.

you could also have a nick in the tube, which would cause it not to hold pressure. this is a pitot.

It's pretty easy and inexpensive to replace the vacuum tube that goes from the pitot tube to the speedo. I just replaced the pitot tube and vacuum tube on my boat (the owner before me installed a kick plate for a trolling motor right over the vacuum tube and crushed it flat. Guess he was more interested in fishing than seeing how fast he was going ).

I tested the speedo first to see if it worked by taking about a foot of tubing attached to speedo and gently blew into it, just enough to see the needle move up to 2-3 mph mark. That way I knew it was worth my while to proceed.

I just came into this thread to say that only fit, young people can really pull off wearing a speedo, and even then it should be limited to women if possible.
