I've been trying to order my starter and they can't seem to determine which flywheel size my engine has with the engine serial number. The reason is because im buying a new starter.

Old Delco remy starter #19985708, new #9000884.

Engine is Mercruiser 5.7L V8. The engine serial number is #0C332099. Is there any way to find out?

It is in a 1988 Rinker.

Desperate for help!

thanks in advance...mike

It's either a 11 1/2" or 14"
What motor do you have?

My 1986 454 is a 14" with 168 teeth. I would think yours is the same. Being you already tried one, what size was it for? It would have to be the other.;)

You have a 14" flywheel. Merc stopped using the 12" back in 85, and your engine is an 88.

I haven't actually tried one physically, just based on ordering. Poorly set up Mercury's part leaving the parts guy to guess the flywheel size.

When I go to Mercury Parts Express for a parts lookup, they give me 3 options. They are:

STARTER MOTOR (12 IN.)
STARTER MOTOR (8 IN. - 3/4 IN. DIA. END CAP)
STARTER MOTOR (8 IN. 2-7/8 IN. DIA. END CAP)

Is their parts system out of wack? I did notice however that no matter which selection I make, the part # is the same. 50-863007A1

DESCRIP OF PART:

Delco PG260 G, 11 tooth pinion, bottom mount, offset bolt pattern

Fits 1996 & newer GM V-6 & V-8 (305 & 350 cid) engines. Also fits 1999 & newer MCM 3.0L.

Serial Number: 0C332099 Model Number: 457S100AS

All those different choices are no longer available for buying a complete starter. The 50-863007A1 number is a superseded number to order for a complete starter.

You can still order parts for one of the other starters, but you need to know which one you have.

Re: How do you tell the size of your flywheel?

If your original Delco starter has staggered bolt holes it's a 14 inch flywheel. If the bolt holes are straight across it's a 12 inch flywheel.
