How do you set the shift rod (turn buckle and lock nut) at the lower unit?

I didn't realize this didn't have to come loose and uncoupled this rod via the turnbuckle when changing the oil seal at the input shaft.

It seems to shift fine now that it's back together. I'm sure I'm close to adjusted properly just by matching up the amount of threads showing in the "before" picture. But I'd like to fine tune if needed.

How do I adjust this rod?

That's on the 50 and smaller.

It's adjusted by trial and error.
Try to get it close to where it was and if it works?? good.
Shift the unit into N then shift the shifter to N.
Then compare the rod and hope your close.
I looked in my older manuals, not one had anything to say
about hooking it up???

Yep! 50hp. And I think it's very close if not the same. Everything works with no grinding (took it out this week). I'll probably nit pick it a little more before the next time I take it out on water.

You just have to make sure it is adjusted correctly.----If forward does not put the clutch dog fully into forward you could be causing damage next week.----Damage to your wallet too.

This thread helped me out. Having the rod disconnected and marking where it is fully in fwd and reverse really lets you know where you're at.

I usually put the shift in neutral and mark the lever somewhere at the block.
Then shift to forward and make a mark.
Shift to reverse and make a mark.
Measure the travel distance for forward and reverse and adjust it until is equal, maybe a bias for the forward gear.
Be sure that the threads has a great rising so not to much turning at the nut. Start at a 1/8 in first and then maybe some more.

Don’t know if this is the right area. I have a force 70Hp 1991. I can get forward gear, but when I select revers, no joy, pull back more get reverse but at high revs. Is there no adjustment on the cable, or is it all done from the linkage to the gearbox.
