The belt pulley which is located on the lower center of the engine is corroded and I want to remove it so I can work on the rust. The pulley has 3 bolts and 1 larger bolt at the very center (I am not able to paste the picture here).

To remove this pulley, do I simply remove the 4 bolts?

Any specific warnings from anyone before I remove this pulley?

Sounds like you need to buy or rent (available at most auto parts stores) a harmonic balancer remover. You remove all the bolts, then use the remover (puller) to pull the ballancer and pulley from the crankshaft.

should be no reason to remove harmonic ballancer to get pully off--loosen alternator--remove belt--remove outer bolts that hold pully to harmonic ballancer--pully will come off without removeing center bolt that holds dampner to crank.

Oh geez....you know you have torn down too many engines when someone asks a simple question and you provide a complex answer. Lowshovel1 is right....if all you want to do is resurface or paint the pulley, there is no need to remove the whole assembly. Remove the three outer bolts and if it is stuck hit it a few times with a rubber hammer.

If this 5.0 is GM based you do have to remove the center bolt also.

If it is a Ford based 5.0 you do not have to remove the center bolt.

It is 5.0 GM. Ok. So I have to remove 3 small bolts and one at the center. I will still try to work around it and clean up the corrosion without the belt. I don't want to do anything wrong and have another problem in my hands. I have read in a thread that someone's belt kept on breaking and it was due to the corroded pulley. I believe it, so I am doing preventive maintenance before this simple problem stalls me on the water.
