I have I believe a 65 or 69 40h.p. selectric shift I'm trying to pull the lower unit to check the impeller.. I dnt want to burn up motor!! It always starts right up and runs great!! I have removed the lower 6 bolts but it will not come apart it acts as if there's a hidden bolt holding it firm together! Do you know of a hidden Bolt or is there something I'm doing wrong I'd greatly appreciate your help don't want to bust anything I hear the parts are extremely hard to come by! Thank you feel free 2 instant message me or p.m. me thanks again

There is a manual which should cover your motor on the Boatinfo website
See Chapter 8: http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1956-1970johnsonevinrude.html

You have to remove the rear lower cowling to find a hidden bolt !!-------Then remove the 2 wee covers so you can feed the wires down with the lower unit.-----Attach something to thee wires to pull them back up.

You're lucky you couldn't get the lower unit off. You would have ripped the electric shift cable in two. Rare, and expensive part. After you get the rear covers off, you will see the electric shift cable. Disconnect it at the rear of the powerhead, then remove the little covers so the cable can feed down. Tie something to it so you can pull it back up when reassembling.
