Hello there. I just picked up an 18' Starcraft with a 100hp merc, guy said he thought motor is a 1996, is an inline 4 oil injected. I replaced the oil hoses that were going bad, hooked up hose and fired it up, no water coming out of pee hole in the back, I shut it down and pulled thermostat to see if that was stuck, ran without the thermostat and then water came out of the vents on lower unit and also warm water out of pee hole on lower unit, but still nothing from the top pee hole. Also ran rough without the thermostat in there? How on earth could that affect the way it idled? The upper portion of the motor seemed to get warm very quickly, dont really have the money to bring to technician, should I assume the water pump is not working well??
[img=http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/5116/100hpmerc7jp.th.jpg]

Tr running a piece of weedeater string through the pee-hole. Sometimes they get clogged by debris or insects. For good measure, I would go ahead and replace the water pump. It is easy to replace, and doesn't cost much (WAAAAY less than a new powerhead).

I don't really think that motor is a '96, post your serial number and someone can look it up for you. It will really help to have the proper manual for the motor. You may need to replace the poppet valve to get this cooling thing taken care of. If the poppet is malfunctioning, it could also cause the motor not to pee.

i think that engine is a 1988 model, not a 1996. I checked your serial number and i believe it is an 88', plus the graphics for the 96' model year are different than those too. those graphics are late 80's through early 90's then they were changed in the mid 90's.

Removing the t-stats will cause the engine to run cooler than the engine should at idle.. Thus you have a rougher idle...

I apologize for this frivilous smartass answer, but I just can't help myself. Disregard!!!!!

If she is a purrin, baby, she ain't starvin for lube, fuel, or coolin.

Best I can describe it. Any of them missing, and she starts getting mad at you.....making noises, throwing parts, leaving a smoke trail, busts your eardrums, or just stops running.....as an OMC did to me one day at 40 mph...just froze up dead. (thermostat stuck closed).......and if you don't think your boat can't stop fast; freeze your engine....better have your lap belt on....couldn't believe how fast that boat could (did) stop.

Mark

Re: how do you know if oil inj and cooling are working?

That is what I dont want to happen Texasmark! Well, 1988 model huh? I didnt think that it looked as new as a '96 would have, no biggie, has good compression, this is my 2nd boat this season and I want to take care of it... I also worry about the oil injection, being older and all, I just like the old fashioned way of having premix, you know it is there, ya know? I dont want to mess anything up by disconnecting the injection though.. Hmm, well, one thing at a time, doing the water pump impeller and T-stat tommorow morning.. One thing at a time I guess.. Any pointers? Thanks fella's

Re: how do you know if oil inj and cooling are working?

these are some thing things i have done to my 1994 merc 200 v6 that you could do to, could, not should...

remove thermostats and replace with stainless steel restrictor washers. remove oil pump and cover with oil pump block off plate. remove oil injection alarm box.remove and plug all remaining oil lines or replace fuel line "T" fittings.

if you remove the oil injection, and yours is like mine, make SURE that you plug the oil injection pressure port on starboard side of the motor wich pressurizes the oil injection tank . if you dont, your losing crankcase pressure and could make your motor an anchor.

just suggestions of what i did. not saying you should, but you could.

I'm running VRO and put my (a new thermostat) in this current model rather than run without it. I decarb'd. Maybe one day go to premix but not yet.

Luck be with you.

Re: how do you know if oil inj and cooling are working?

Whelp, I got the new water pump impeler in and the T-stat and she is pissing water! I am running pre mix on a 6 gal tank external because I replaced all of the clear (brittle) oil lines and I wanted to be sure that all of the air is out and that oil is going thru.. Seems to be working out.. Was tough getting the lower unit back on by myself, managed though.. Now seems to be idling rough and backfiring a bit, did not do this when I first got it, everything seems to be in place, not sure, any suggestions??
