need to know what it looked like before. Might be a junk boat to start with. In a protected cove (as it appears) might be the kind of boat that it won't hurt it.

We all see boats that appear shamefully neglected, year round and all over the country, but best not to judge unless you know the owner's circumstances.

Re: How do you forget...

It actually happens a lot up here... boats freezing in that is.
It's just the 1st time I happen to have a camera with me.
A guy from down in the city will figure he can sneek in one last weekend before closing up the cottage and something comes up that he cant for one reason or another.
He can't leave it there. Come Feb the ice will be 3' to 4' thick.
The boat and the engines lower would get destroyed.
He'll have to get someone to cut it out with a chain saw, won't be hard if he gets to it soon.
There's only a few inches of ice right now.

Why even worry about what someone else does with their boat.

Who knows, he may have been in a car accident or something and is in the hospital and the boat is the last thing on his mind.

Re: How do you forget...

I live in Europe. Never in my life (i'm 34 years old) i didn't saw the Danube river frozen..never until last winter. The problem was we din't saw that comming until was to late. The result, ....for us, a lot of hard work to get our boats off the water, but no damage. For some vessels the result was a lot worse. Our boats in frozen water:
IMAG0195.jpg
Some of the boats pushed on land by the force of ice, other boats and pontoons capsized.

Lesson learned, when you see ice floating on water is time to get very quickly the boat out of water :)
