How do you find out how many hours is on a engine

Is there any way to find out how many hours is on a engine? The previous owner never installed one. I was hoping there was a way for my own knowing and also so I could buy a hour meter(knowing how many are on it now). Thanks guys

I think the ECU should record engine hours. Do you know someone with a code reader?
