Just wondering how to chenge the impeller on this boat I just recently purchased. And yes, I am new to this and I know this is probably for most of you a dumb question. I know on some outdrives there is something like an access cover to change it out easily. I'm figuring that I'm not that lucky. Thanks for any help. I have a 1984 Thompson boat with a 3.0 OMC and a stringer type outdrive.

I remove the drive, then lift the upper out of the outdrive. The water pump is on the underside of the upper gearcase. Factory service manual recommended for that job. It isn't particularly difficult, but you want to read the process for disconnecting the shift cable properly.

Really? I was just about to ask this question. I am at work and dont have the manual with me. Ill be looking at it tomorrow.

I thought that you would just have to remove the covers, I didnt think that you had to remove the whole outdrive....

The other part of the question that I wanted to ask was... How do I know if it is the impeller that I need to change? Is that the "tattle-tale" hole? If the stream is not good, most likely the impeller is the problem? I also have a 3.0 OMC, which has the stringer 400.
