How do you adjust throttle linkage?

I have a 1980 30ft SeaRay Weekender w/ twin 454hp Mercruiser inboards. Replaced the linkage last year. The boat is very sluggish to respond to throttle movement, especially in reverse, making it very difficult to dock the boat. And when it finally does respond, it lurches into gear. Any hints???

I do not know boats of your size but here are some thoughts, check the cables, make sure they are not binding. My old boat gave problems and it was the shift cable for the outdrive binding, replaced that cable and all was good. Your discription sound like some thing is binding and you have to put too much pressure on the lever to make it shift and when it moves it goes too far.
