The manual I have says both open ends of the seals face outward or towards the bottom when inserting but I don't think that is the way they came out. Who can tell me for sure? Thanks.

Manuals sometimes have bad interpretation issues when traduced to other languages. Schematic diagram shows seal lips facing upward. If that's the position of current old ones, they are positioned right.

Not sure how the first was but the bottom one had the flat side towards the bottom. What is confusing is that OMC's go back to back.

Is that a OMC engine model? the code corresponds to Nissan, Tohatsu brand models. If being the latter, both upper & lower seal lips must rests in upright position according to spare parts manual indication.

If you say both lips face upward, I'll have to go with that since the upper one got beat up coming out and I'm not sure about it. It's a Tohatsu. I was just wondering why Tohatsu and OMC put them in the opposite way. Both way's work I guess.
