I have a 1986 Larson with a mcm228 mercruiser. Last summer I was having problems, when I was shifting from reverse to neutral the motor will stall instantly. There was no sputter. Is there a way to test the switch or should I just replace it?

thanks
John

Your switch is probably OK....
I would oil the pivot points on the shift plate & see if that helps....
If not, your lower shift cable is on its way out......
The fact that the switch is killing the engine means that it is working........;)

My 1988 omc was doing that after the drive was pulled (serviced by OMC tech, and newer style esa module installed: lower shift cable was adjusted, as it was only 2 years old). Inoticed slop in the remote, and replaced it and the cables-no more stalling .

Ok, I was thinking it might be the cable. How hard is it to replace? Is is something one guy can do? Where is a good place to look for directions on doing this? If I need to tear things apart to fix it, what other fixes should I make at that same time?

Thanks alot
