How do I test a shift interrupter switch?

Hey all,
I have a 1970 Mercruiser 165 3.0L with an iL6 that I’m having a bit of trouble getting spark. I have a new battery, reading just under 12 volts on a multimeter, and have a new ignition coil on hat has an ohm resistance of around 5, the ignition coil on there previously reads the same thing, so I assume they both work fine still. My next option was to test the shift interrupter as I’ve heard these are common problems with older Mercruisers. I’m just curious of how to use my multimeter to do that? I have also tried bypassing the shift interrupter by connect a hot wire from the positive battery terminal to the positive terminal on the coil. Not seeing any spark at the points either. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated!

use the dwell meter for troubleshooting and setting the dwell.

You can press it with your finger when the engine is running. See if it’s actually functioning
