Question: How do I set the timing on a 4.3L GM Vortec Motor?

1991 19? Open bow ski boat
GM 4.3L GM Vortec Motor
OMC Cobra Stern Drive

Over the past year or so I have been working hard and using a lot of great information from this site to replace the motor in my boat. Due to a dumb oversight by me I cracked my block and it had to be replaced. I put in a GM Vortec motor along with an electric fuel pump, pertronix ignition conversion, and quadrajet carburetor.

My problem is I have read everything I can find regarding timing of vortec motors. What I find is they are set by the factory and computer controlled in the trucks they were designed to run in. Mine has a composite chain cover with a V ?guage?. I have it running ?by ear? but I would like to ?dial? it in on the timing if this is possible. Can any of you give me some tips on my issue?

I would be most grateful.

pertronix is going to adjust the same as points....
Pull out your timing light and point, shoot, and twist.

What is this "V gauge" you speak of? Is it a standard timing index tab or just a single point? A picture may help here.

Are you sure of what you have there?
The 91's weren't Vortec engines. If you have one with the big composite valve covers instead of the stamped steel ones, the the engine may have been replaced. Then it's a matter of determining exactly which engine and distributor you actually have.

The timing index marks should be on your harmonic balancer with the latter composite "v" notch covers. If not, you probably can get a timing tape to fit it.
