How do I replace a propeller!

I have to remove the prop from a '93 Yamaha 250. Never done this before. I need all the help I can get! Does anyone know the size of the bolt, (I want to make sure I go down to the boat with the right tools... Should I use a rachet or a wrench?) Is there any trick or trap I should be aware of before I start? What should I have handy? The instruction manual says there'll be a spare cotter pin on the steering "handle". What is the steering "handle"! You sure can tell this is my first boat! Something tells me I'll be doing this pretty often!

The prop nut is a "king" nut that allows a cotter pin through so it will not back out. You can purchase a specific prop wrench (usually made out of plastic) or you can get by with a 10" cresant wrench and a pair of pliers to straighten the cotter pin out. Remove the pin, loosen the nut (which will not be too tight at all) and the possibilty of a washer exsists too. Slide off your prop...done. Re-install the same way and be sure NOT to tighten the nut to much....just enough to seat the prop all the way down and re-install the pin. Not seeing your motor I have no idea where yamaha hides the extra pin. For safety reasons I carry a new nut and pin in my glove box and only a vise grip for the emergency use. Easy stuff and it is not done often.<br /><br />Bob

Be carefull after get nut off most engine have a keyed washer to take off before you pull prop. Also when you pull prop normally a thrust bearing behind prop. They usually stay on the prop shaft but can stick to the prop as you pull it off then fall off into the water. Also I would greese prop shaft with good water proff grease before putting prop back. Socket wrench or prop wrench best way to remove nut.
