Well finally got the 1987 225hp evinrude resto rebuild started today. At first I thought I had installed the water pump wrong because nothing was coming out of the peep hole. So shut it down and tore the lower unit off to check everything out. Nothing wrong that I could see so called my local dealer and found it takes a bit to get the water to come out the peep hole.

Also once I restarted the motor and let it heat up, alternating between 650 to 1500 rpm, the temp guage spiked to max and stayed there. I check all around the block head with an infered temp probe and the max reading I got was 164'F so I need to investigate that issue some more.

Also tried to set the idle to 1200rpm, as per Joe Reeves direction, but could not get it to go that high. No matter how much I turned in or out the screw in the end of the "timing spring cylinder" that is connected directly to the timer base, the rpm stayed at 650-750rpm.

So how do you set the idle RPM and timing. What is the timing I am looking for at idle? I know the WOT timing is 18 degrees.

Also when I shut it down I did a compression test, warm, and all the cylinders where within 1 psi. 80 psi was the reading, butI was using a Harbour Feight compression gage so I do not trust the reading but the spread should be right on.

Only ran the motor for 10-15 minutes on muffs. Need to find out how to set the timing at idle before going anywhere more with the running/breaking.

Any help here would put my mind at rest. Could not find anything in the manual that covers this. But I may not be looking in the right place also.
