Hope I'm not getting on you guys' nerves by asking so many questions.
I need to re-wire everthing from the ignition switch (which I've yet to buy) all the way back to the outboard,(58 Rude 18hp fast twin, electric start)with a starter solenoid in between.Does anyone make a pre-wired harness, or do I need a wiring diagram? Got a bunch of nav lights and stuff to wire in between as well. No clue where to start, but I don't want to be loading the thing up with voltage in the wrong place and blowing my coils out.The flywheel is tough enought to take off once.Really don't need to do that again if I can get away with it.Any help is always GREATLY appreciated.

That motor doesn't have a generator so any accessories you add will just run off the battery and be mindful that you will need to re-charge the battery on schedule as to how many and how much you use the accessories. All the battery does for the motor is start it, then the magneto runs the motor.

As long as you don't connect the two little black magneto wires up to +12v, you won't blow anything up. The trick is not to use an auto-store keyswitch. ;)
What wires have you got hanging out of the outboard now? We may be able to throw a schematic together for you. You'll have to learn how to crimp wires and such, but it's not difficult with the proper tools.

Re: HOW DO I ??- PART DUEX

Thank you Liet. Walker!
I've got two deep cycle batteries and a fine charger that should handle all of those issues if I can get this puppy wired.

Capt. Paul!
When I got the boat, I had an ignition switch (rusted, destroyed),a push-in choke switch, and a starter solenoid. All wiring was completely gone with the exception of a couple of 5 inch vestiges of battery cables coming from the connector to the outboard. All the rusted out nav lights had wires dangling in the hull. And a freakin' 8 track tape player (8 track-no less!!) mounted in the dash panel that was connected to nothing! That was it! I can't find any reference material at all as to how to redo this stuff.I can splice, crimp, etc. like a madman due to my networking. No clue what type of ignition switch to buy, or where to start wiring.

LOL! Sounds like you'll need to condemn the whole lot then. I think I've got one of those old 8-track to cassette converters around if you want to get with the 1980s. :)
Ok, I suggest you get an outboard ignition switch with a 'Push to Choke' feature. The way this one works is as you push on the key, the choke solenoid activates. Makes for nice 1 handed starts.
Ah, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Give me some time to whip up a schematic - a picture's worth a thousand words afterall. There's book on the subject that comes highly recomended called:
Powerboater's Guide to Electrical Systems: Maintenace, Troubleshooting, and Improvements
by Edwin R. Sherman
(C&P - thanks rwidman)
Here's some educational links:
Boat US TOC
Excerpts from the ABYC's standards. (Reference)

Strangely enough, I'm already shopping for the ignition/choke combo.I did buy a new starter solenoid. The old one was nothing but a hunk of rust.A good schematic would be a Godsend.I'll send you some barbeque from down south. :p

I'm working on it. Unfortunately, I've got it half-made in Autocad R14, Circad, and Corel Draw. :D
I'll get it up sometime tonight though - I'm heading out to visit the woods for the weekend tomorrow.
You got an outboard starter/solenoid? It's important not to use a car one (it's wired different).

Ok, here it is:
Schematic, click here.

The wire colours are the BIA ones. You'll probably want to put some sort of connector between the Boat/Engine (where I have the wavey lines) for everything but the battery starter cables. If you leave your outboard on usually you can just use a terminal strip like this:
B78-2b.gif
But if you disconnect it a lot you might want to use a quick connector like a trailer plug. The wire should be marine grade, as well as the crimp connectors and terminal block, switches, etc. You want an ignition switch like this one:

That's pretty much a totally basic schematic. If you want to add other acessories, that 20A fuse is going to get loaded down quick. I figured 7A for the choke solenoid, 3A for the starter solenoid, and about 3A for the lights. That leaves pretty well 3 usable amps left (it's best not to use more than 80% of a circuit). So if your looking at extra stuff, consider using a fuse panel in place of the 20A inline fuse.

Capt.Paul!
You've outdone yourself. The Schematic is going to do the trick and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.I do have a brand new starter solenoid that came in the mail yesterday. The outboard has this cool little five prong male/female connector that everything plugs into,so the trailer plug won't be needed. Connector from starter solenoid.I still have the old solenoid and the connector coming from it.I should be able to reproduce the wiring using the old one as a template. Also, thanks for the link for the ignition switch. I'll be buying that tomorrow night.Cheapest I've seen so far.Gotta bunch of other questions but I'll create a new post. Thanks again!

Looks like the connector is,in fact, toast.I'll be disconnecting it from the boat quite often. Will a trailer plug work? I think so with everything except the actual battery cable.Anybody make a quick disconnect for that?

Re: HOW DO I ??- PART DUEX

I use a 7 pin rv/trailer plug on the 28hp. Don't tell anyone, but I route starter currrent through it too. Works great so far, but I do baby it. :)
(If you're going to (foolishly) follow my (very bad) example, I strongly suggest you use two prongs for starter +12v and two prongs for ground. Naturally, I just use one prong for +12v (the big one anyway) and two little prongs for ground, but do as I say rather than as I do. :D )

Whoa Nelly! Another opportunity to create the elusive floating bonfire :D .Can't wait to try it!!
As always Capt. Paul,You are a genius.Still owe you the BBQ for the schematic.
