How do I manually tilt a 9.9 Bigfoot?

I bought a 2002 9.9 Bigfoot exl shaft, and I didn't get a users manual. I figured out how to do everything except tilt it back up. I've been using the "c" shaped lever on the shaft, but it seems to me there's probably an easier way since reaching back around the shaft and holding that lever up while trying to lift the motor is precarious and awkward. What am I missing?

Try putting the gearshift in "Forward"....and tilt on it....that oughta do it....it did for me....
I also, read thousands of posts here....found out a lot about my 2002 "non-bigfoot" 9.9 Mercury 4 stroke...without having to ask any questions...so far....

Are you really serious that you haven't figured this out since June of 2010???? In that amount of time, how many boat dealers have you passed??? A 5 minute stop at a marina, boat dealer, Cabelas, Bass Pro would have produced an answer. There is only one way to tilt the engine. Relase the tilt lock and pull it up. Set the latch to prevent it from dropping down again. Since this is an extra long shaft I will assume the engine is installed on a sail boat which makes access to the motor a little difficult. But then I can't see your boat so that's an "ify" statement as well. Some things are just not simple and one must cope.

Hey Gglaesemann. I just picked up a 2005 9.9 Bigfoot today, and was having the same problem. It is NOT that intuitive, and (sorry Silvertip) that is not the function of the "tilt lock" button. The tilt lock botton allows the motor to either stay in the raised position when manually tilted, or lift up and drop right back down. As Pudfark said, the putting it in forward gear is the secret. The reason is that when the motor is in forward, the motor must be allowed to "kick up" if you hit something.

So, turn the tiller handle to the "Forward" position (WITHOUT depressing the neutral button) and the stainless bar in front of the shaft will raise, and there is a trip mechanism on that bar that will raise the collar that you have been raising by hand.

Hope that helps.

My 91 9.9 works that way, needs to be in forward gear.
