how do i know if its a alpha one gen1 or gen 2

i recently bought a 2000 bayliner capri 1750, 3.0L mercruiser alpha 1,, but how do i know if its a gen 1 or a gen 2?

Welcome to iboats!:cool:

Your question is discussed here. I would guess you have a Gen 1 if it's the original drive, but read to make sure.

It's a Gen II. The Alpha i ended in 1990, from 91 on were Gen II's

It's a Gen II. The Alpha i ended in 1990, from 91 on were Gen II's

Almost true. Mercruiser began production of the Gen II in 1991 but that doesn't mean OEMs didn't use leftover 1990 Alpha 1 drives in 1991 production boats. Ask me how I know.

Yeah.....but a 1991 drive on a 2000 boat?........that would REALLY be a "left-over"!!

With Bayliner's production volume, they'd have had to have purchased a ton of Alpha 1 drives to still be using them 10 years after Merc stopped making them!

I would bet that since Brunwick owns both Bayliner and Merc, Bayliner may have known about the Gen II drives being in the works.
