How do I find the S/N on my Mercruiser?

Hi, I'm a new boater. Just bought an old (1979) Chris Craft Bowrider with a 305 Mercruiser, with is sterndrive. I'd like to buy a manual and parts, but I need to know the engine serial number. Anyone know where I might find it, as well as any other numbers I might need. Tight lines....

Your outdrive is the MerCruiser I but I'm not certain of the model (888 or 898). Look for the outdrive's serial numbers on the "MerCruiser" or "888" or "898" decals attached to your outdrive. The engine serial number should be stamped on an i.d. plate located on rear top of cylinder block between intake manifold and flywheel housing (888) or on right rear of engine block above the starter motor (898). I believe the service manual you want is publication C-90-71707 880. I've seen these sold on Ebay, but you should be able to order one via Mercury Marine or Ken Cook.<br /><br />Good luck...<br /><br />Walt
