How Do I Find Out What I Have?

A friend of mine just traded motors with me. I traded a v-6 pontiac motor for what he called a Mercruiser 302. There are no legible stickers. It is an 8 cylinder marine engine without the manifolds. The only thing I can find to show what it is is a cast Ford logo on the water pump. I would like to put it to use, but I need to identify it, first. Where can I find the serial number(s)and/or any other identifier(s)?

hey,ddan welcomeaboard. you can be sure it is a ford 302 smallblock which im sure youve figured out. i dont know anymore about ident. i once had a correctcraft with a 302 holman moody, (ford). the starter,crank,dist.,timing,etc.was backwards it may have been unique to the correctcraft but maybe worth looking into sorry im no more help.try clicking on search forums. your info may already be posted elsewhere. i usually find what im looking for without posting. goodluck
