89 evinrude 40 hp vro. power tilt will not move. got motor to up position by loosening hex plug on underside of pump. have no idea of where to refill fluid, the electric motor is on the left side and the ram is on the right. on top of the ram is a small (1/4 in.) hex plug put fluid in there but it only took about an ounce. i'm pretty sure this is not the right place to fill.

Re: how do i fill power tilt?

I beleive there should be a fill plug located on the side of the ram assembly, porobably looks similar to the fill plug on the gearcase. A diagram of the T&T unit can be found at the BRP site using this link.

http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E

In the future it might help to have a manual before you go putting things into unknown orifices ;)

Thanks, MCM. looked at the site and it shows a fill plug in the side of the ram where you would expect it to be but mine has no such plug.

p.s. good advice, got into more trouble putting things into unknown orifices.

Can you post a part # for the t&t, might be able to cross reference and get an acurate diagram.

there are no part numbers on the unit. the ser. # of the motor is 02257732 and model # e40tlcec. the unit does look like the one on the brp site. I looked on the back, no plug. there is a large screw under the elec. motor but it is facing the side mounting bracket. would need to remove the unit to unscrew it.

Well Mike, any plug located low on the unit could be the drain plug, the refill has to be located higher up on the unit, somewhere? do you recognize the screw you put fluid into anywhere on the diagram?

Re: how do i fill power tilt?

the hole with the hex plug that i put fluid into is located along side the ram tube and runs from the top to the bottom with a hex plug in either end. it is the visable in the diagram at brp. was only able to put a very small amount of fluid in the hole.

if the fill plug is to the side between the mounting bracket. how do i remove the rod that holds the unit to the mounting brackets so i can swing the unit out and un screw the plug?

From the diagram it looks to be held in place by bushings, 1 on each side. I've never done it, but you may be able to pry them out using a screwdriver. A service manual for your motor would probably explain the procedure.

Mike, Thanks for the help,i'll get a service manual. this is a project boat that i started in the spring. replaced transom, stringers and the floor. the boat came with a 67 starflight 100 hp which needed too many parts. but everything has taken 10 time longer. I learned to be patient.

Re: how do i fill power tilt?

to follow up and close this post, the screw plug was on the left side of the unit. a strange place to put something that requires filling. I could not remove the top or bottom rods to tilt the unit out, so I used a pair of long nose vise grips and was able to remove the plug. used a flexable hose to add the fluid. should not of been this hard to do, but it did work and the unit is now working.
