How do I choose a Tachometer?

Hello,

I am interested in getting a tachometer for my 2-stroke Suzuki DT25 (Model No:02503-132880). If I am not mistaken my engine has a maximum of 5-6,000rpm so any tacho limit above this should do. Unfortunately I have no idea what else to look for while choosing a tachometer.

So I got a few Q's

1. Do all types of tachometers fit my engine?
2. Can I fit a tacho from a different manufacturer ie Mercury or Yamaha etc?
3. I read in Ebay adverts that some tachos that fit outboards that are equipped with a 12 pole alternator. Is my Suzuki equipped with this alternator?
4. Do I need to know anything else about tachometers

Thank you in advance,

Re: How do I choose a Tachometer?

Last Xmas my kids got me a "Tiny Tach". It not only gives me the rpm's but has a re-setable hour meter. And it only cost about $40.00. Easy to install - a single ground wire and a 4 wrap wire around a spark plug wire.

Here's the URL:

Have severals in use, works fantastic, can be placed interior or exterior, if exterior (attached to front cowl near tiller) can be used to monitor the engine rpm while cruising, adjust idle minimum rpm, wot tests to choose the best pitch for max performance for that boat/engine configuration. Has hour meter for keeping daily hours used and to perform preventive maintenances at a given number of worked hours. Installs in minutes.

Re: How do I choose a Tachometer?

Hi,

Thank you very much for all the info. I had a look at the tinytachs and they are indeed very tempting and versatile but I would prefer to install an "ordinary" tachometer and slowly add more gauges (is speedometer, voltage etc). Its an early attempt to create a nice panel of gauges for the boat!

This brings me back to the old questions on whether I can fit another brands' tacho on my Suzuki and how can I find how many poles there are on my 2-stroke Suzuki DT25 (Model No:02503-132880).

Generally what do I do to select a tacho?

Tachometer for a Suzuki two stroke?

Tachometer for a Suzuki two stroke?

That is a great question. I am currently perusing my clymer manual to figure out the answer for the same question. I have come as far as identifying the wires ( Yellow, gray, black), max rev speed, and trying to figure out if this 6 pole- 7k rev tach. will work for my 95' DT75... I'll let ya know when/if i find it... the index's in these things are real vague on the subject. I cant believe that this subject/question has been answered by now on this sight... dont understand with all this information, that noone can answer simple questions like this one.... what # of poleson on a tack will work for suzuki two-strokes? thanks for any help?
