how do i check overheating alarm

i have a 1976 135hp evinrude, and want to check the overheating alarm in the contr. box to see if it is working prop. how do i do this? can i just hook up the wire to something thats really hot and make it sound off like that or do i test it while im changing/testing the thermostats? if so how?? i was going through the manual and couldnt find anthing on this.

On the head/heads there will be a tan wire comong out of the temp sensor. With the key in the on position uncouple the tan wire by the head and touch the wiring harness end to a good ground on the engine. The horn should sound.<br />That is only a horn and wiring test. It will not tell you if the sensors are working right.
