How do I check condition of axle ?

I recently purchased what I think is a 1986 shorelander galvanized single axle boat trailer. It looks tired but it seems solid. (a 20 ft. 3,000 lb boat sits on it.) All the bolts have surface rust but nothing seems to be eaten away. I have replaced the coupler and the leaf springs. How do I check the condition/strength of the axle? There is only minor surface rust on the galvanized roller arms, beams and cross members. I'd like to get another season or 2 out this thing if possible. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Re: How do I check condition of axle ?

I have a 1987 Shoreland'r single axle supporting a 22.5' 2600 lb.(dry) boat.

The axle is rated, I think, at 3500 lb (fully loaded). Now you need proper tires to really support that. Mine had 14" "G" rated bias plies and I recently upgraded to Goodyear Marathon radials in 15" and 2.25 size. Had to remove the fenders and now need to fit replacments

Unless the axle had been damaged, or the bearing areas are ruined, you may want to pay more attention to replacing the springs, as those are more likely to failure from fatigue and rust, in my opinion.

Re-read that you have replaced springs. Would not worry about axle unless you see a reason to.
