I have a 650 Mercury 1964 65HP and want to change the water pump impeller. Do I drop the lower unit and seperate the pump and change the impeller just like that or is there more to it? Also how much is a new impeller. I know I know cheaper than a new motor but could someone give me an idea. Thanks

Re: How do I change the water pump impeller

I gotta tell you I did this myself for the first time on an outboard a week ago. If I didn't have the manual, I probably would've bent the driveshaft while dropping the lower unit and put myself into an expensive mess. That book was the best 20 bill I've dropped in a while. Not to be a jerk, but you need the book and they aren't hard to get.<br />You do need to drop the lower unit. My water pump change on a 55hp Ev took about three hours. About 1 hr of that was removing lower unit, replacing water pump assy, then re-installing. The other 2 hrs was figuring out why it wouldn't shift between fwd and reverse after, which turned out to be the shift linkage 180 degrees out (and the picture in the Seloc manual wasn't clear enough to tell). I think now I could do it in about 30 minutes, including replacing the oil in the lower unit as well.
