How do I change oil in trim pump system?

I have a quicksilver 3000 classic and I'd like to change the oil in the whole system. The oil is slightly milky due to an inbound water leak. I will take the time at the end of this boating season to repair/rebuild the whole system, but I don't want to lose the last three or four weeks of good boating conditions here in Utah while I wait for my boat mechanic to do the work.

I think the inbound water leak is pretty slow, so some fresh oil should prevent any motor/pump damage until I can get it done right.

I couldn't find the answer to this question anywhere in the "search" areas.

Thanks!

i would say just unhook a line and run pump and dont let it run empty just keep pouring in new fluid till you see it come out clean. Thats the way i would do it, but someone else might have a better way.

Hey! That's not a bad idea! I'll just figure out which line is the return to the reservoir and let the pump push all the old oil through the system and into a catch pan. After a couple cycles, it should be mostly brand new oil.

Thanks!

Anybody else have a better idea?

That is what your throttle control is, not what engine and drive. But assuming you have a Mercruiser (Quicksilver is Mercruiser) engine and it's new enough to have a trim pump with a plastic reservoir, do this.

Remove the trim pump reservoir, clean out (With solvent) all the milky oil. Trust me, there are a lot of cavities in there that will hold milky oil. Then put it back on. Attach lines and top off with new oil.
Remove all the hoses off the trim cylinder and hold in a bucket. Run the pump both up and down till you get clean oil out of all lines.
Now, remove the trim cylinders from the drive and hold them in a bucket or over a pan and operate the rod both directions and force all the milky oil ouf the the cylinders you can. They hold a lot.
Now put it all back together and operate up and down while keeping the oil topped off. They are self bleeding.
