How do I bleed tilt/trim ?

I am trying to bleed the tilt/trim unit on my 1980 50hp Merc. The unit is reluctant to lower from fully raised position without downward pressure on the motor so I figure a bleed may help. Any advice appreciated.

Well hello again!!

System is self bleeding....just cycle up and down a few times, then recheck fluid level

>be sure oil is full (with motor down, oil should be level with fill hole)
>be sure vent screw is open at all times
>be sure thumb screw valve is backed out all the way (CCW)

good luck! :)

Well thank you again schematic ! I'll just finish my beer and pop out the back and do exactly just that. It's abt 40deg C here today and with all the bushfires the air is just a little smokey. Just for my education, why is the vent screw open during this process ?

unfortunately, my web page is down, so I can't post a picture. There should be two plugs close by. The upper is a vent, the lower is a fill. The vent is supposed to be left open all the time. If it is closed, unit will make squealing noises, stutter and jerk.

I'm presuming you have an internal 'pump motor' assembly inside the boat

Wally Grout is slang for shout. When at the pub someone may say "your wally mate", meaning your turn to buy the round of drinks. When Wally smiles upon you, you are said to have many people getting the rounds. Wally may also knock with his elbow as he is carrying a unit of backyard currency. A unit of backyard currency equals one carton of beer, which is said to be a slab or a box. He has to knock with his elbow as his hands are otherwise occupied with slabs.

Sorry Philby, didn't see you are from that part of the world. Wally in reality was a test Wicket Keeper many years ago circa Beefy Botham.
