How do chips in my skeg affect performance?

I'm considering buying a used outboard which has several chips out of the bottom and front of the skeg. There are probably 4 or so that are maybe a 1/4 in.in depth. The motor is a 1985 Merc. 90HP. Will this affect performance in any way? Would it be unwise to purchase this engine if my intent is not to spend the money to repair the skeg to perfect form.

Thanks for any assistance.

I'm no pro on this subject but if the motor is in sound condition, I wouldn't discard it for a few dings in the skeg. My biggest concern would be that the skeg isn't straight. If it is straight, there are two options. Bring the motor to a marine shop and they will fix it and it's rather inexpensive or go to a local automotive store and buy liquid aluminum and fix it yourself.

The other option you have is to ask the owner to have the skeg repaired as a condition of sale.

Just my 2 cents.

I would agree with Dyno...should not be a problem. The motors been around for 17 years...check the prop, ask a few questions, look for leaks in hub. I wouldn't be too concerned if that's the only problem. I'd also try to get some sence as to how many hours...that's an old motor. Just a few thoughts... ;)
