how difficult is it to rebuild lower unit

I am getting some bits of metal flakes stuck on the magnet after only 1 hr run-time. I just got this engine. I am lucky.

I have tools, work on cars, rebuilt a VW car engine and a V4 mercury powerhead way back when. Assuming I can find the shop manual for a 2001 Johnson 150HP, how difficult is it going to be to tear down a lower unit? Do you need a machine shop? Bunch of special tools? Or is it just a matter of labor and parts?

if it is flakes and not chunks, probably normal. as all the oil really does not drain out, and settles to bottom. if you get chunks be worried. it very well could be the 1st time the oil was changed.

If the gearcase does have to come apart, there are a number of special tools required, plus a good service manual.

OK, I wait to see if it chunks up. Hope not. In any case I found a service manual (not a general repair manual), so that is one step. Can never hurt having the book, and it only cost me $7.50.
