How Deep to Dig - '84 GT150 Restore

'84 GT 150 (J150STLCRD) restoration in progress.

Motor has low hours, but hasn't been run in 15+ years.

Pulled carbs and intake manifold (to get the old gloop out) and clean up the engine as a whole.

How much further should I go? Would like to avoid taking power head further apart unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks for the advice.

A compression test will tell a good part of the tale. If all cylinders test within 10% of each other, you'll probably have a good, usable engine once you get all the other stuff sorted out.

I'd give a number for the compression, but it seems like all gauges read differently. Over 100 PSI is expected.

I had originally taken the boat to a reputable marine shop, and he told me the compression checked out fine. I'll take his word for it.

i'd dig a bit more around the edges,


1 water pump, thats every 2 yrs....so..

2 remove prop and check for line on the shaft (fishin line that is)
clean shaft and reinstall prop with fresh lube on shaft...new cotter pin.

3 change gear oil in lower unit....use new seals on drain screws.

4 Change fuel filter.

5 rebuild carbs if not done already with new kits.

6 clean all grounds from battery to coils.

after pumping bulb firm, look for fuel leaks,
use a flashlight and look for hose leaks around the engine.

replace all fuel lines from tank to carbs, with alcohol resistant fuel lines, it will save you many headaches.

Thanks all. You guys are great.

Caburetors: 90% done.

Fuel Lines & hoses: In progress. What's in there now is a mess. The lines from the tank to the engine were harder than a brick.

Fuel filter: Good call; I read something somewhere that it could be cleaned, but I think after 25 years, it's earned a replacement.

Water pump: Next biggie on the to-do list. I'm building a pretty impressive pile of parts in my garage, so I'm saving that for when I'm done with the powerhead section. Thank goodness for documentation, digital camera, and patient wife.

Propeller: Amazingly clean and easy to remove. I really expected the prop to be seized to the shaft, but it came right off. Following the SELOC manual on lubrication, etc.

Hah, you're brave getting into the engine armed only with a seloc,
try the real thang.

Any recommendations - or just get the official OMC one?

As funding is getting tight, I'm slowing things down a bit on this little project. I've got another few hundred $$ in parts that I know need to go. However, I will say that it's gone pretty smoothly so far, due in large part to this forum.

Genuine factory manuals, all others are confusing and sketchy, look at all the money you're saving.!
You can find them a bit cheaper on ebay.

If money is tight get on Ebay, they usually have OMC manuals for a good price, stay away from the CDs, they are worse than Selocs!

The factory manual will pay for itself the first time you open it, they are invaluable if you are doing your own mechanical.
