How deep should my prop be?

Hi, I have a 16' Southern Skimmer flat bottom skiff with a 40hp Yamaha. It's fitted with an aftermarket tilt & trim but I think my motor's mounted too low since, when I'm running, water flies into the back of the boat and there is a really big wall of water shooting nearly straight up just behind the transom. Is there a certain depth that my prop should be? I've tried to correct the problem by trimming but can't seem to solve it. Thanks

Rule of thumb is cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of the hull. Will vary with hull, weight load and prop design but a good place to start.

...and if you have an after market combo setback and trim bracket raise to 1" above the keel.....And check to see if the new bracket is sticking down below the bottom...
