How cold do you stay in water?

Volvo 5.0GL raw water cooled - Boat is slipped in salt water in the VA Chesapeake Bay area. I do not have a trailer and would like to stay in the water until late DEcember, but I can't winterize in the water because there is no shut-off valve in the intake hose. Next Tuesday night it is supposed to go down to 20 with a high of 32 the next day, then it warms up for the rest of the extended forecast. Would you go ahead and haul out for the winter or stay in to fish the rest of the striped bass season? Any thoughts appreciated.

Ayuh,.... I'd go down 'n take a saltwater bath puttin' a ballvalve on the intake hose, 'n Drain the raw water out of it....

You can put in a proper seacock at haul-out....

Thats a real crap shoot and could be costly. Do the math. Drain it now while you can before any damage takes place.

Lola, if you could hook up some portable heater in the bilge, they make them for boats and when the motor gets warm the heat will transfer through all the water and keep it from freezing. Just a thought Buz

I am installing a 1" bronze, ball valve in the hose about 12" from where the hose comes from the drive on each of the twins.

Thanks for the response. Went fishing yesterday and water temp in the marina was 35, bilge water was not frozen - I think I'm going to roll the dice and live to fish next weekend! And, yes, I will post if I wind up with a cracked block.

I guess I don't understand. Aren't the block and manifold drains above the waterline? Why not drain what you can? Seems like you should be able to completely drain the manifolds and at least partly drain the block. Just thoughts.

Thank you! Made the 2 hour trip to the boat to do this yesterday. Was able to sleep last night. We are getting hit with an arctic blast. Thanks again.

good move, that't the only way to be safe, my next I/O will have closed cooling for sure, in part to make the draining easier....
