I was wondering what the diff are between the Merc 3.3 the Thatsu 3.5 and the 4.0 one cyl two stroke motors are and if I can modify the merc for a little more oomph?
Difference is black paint vs. gray paint, decals, price and warranty. Other than that, exactly the same although Merc's cowling is nicer than the Tohatsu (which probably explains the higher price). The Tohatsu 4.0 is not a 2-stroke though. It's a 4-stroke. I don't think you get can much more oomph out of the 3.3/3.5. It is what it is.
Is the tohatsu actually 3.5 hp and what makes it have .2 more HP then the merc?
The reason I ask is that my merc will plane my dink with just me aboard, but add my 119 pound wife and it will not quite plane. I was thinking that extra .2 hp might do the trick.
Re: How can I increase HP in 2005 Merc/Tohatsu 3.3 hp
I would allmost bet that the HP difference is on paper.
And jets won't solve your power needs.
I'm surprised it will plane with you alone unless you are in the middle seat (middlesection)
In fact with the shape of most dinks I've seen I'm surprised it will plane at all.
A dink with a little longer footprint might get up better.
Re: How can I increase HP in 2005 Merc/Tohatsu 3.3 hp
It's an 8 ft inflatable West Marine Zodiak roll up with a max hp rating of 4. I got the merc because it is very light and I work ar WM. I do not think the rating differences are on paper because all motors HP is measured at the prop nowadays. Where can I find the carb jet sizes for both the nissan and the merc. The lightest 4 hp motors are too heavy for my wife to lift down to me in the dink.
We have a sailboat.
Re: How can I increase HP in 2005 Merc/Tohatsu 3.3 hp
Tohatsu told me the only diff between their 2.5 and 3.5 is a restrictor plate behind the carb of the 2.5.
The merc comes with a 6" pitch prop and the Tohatsu comes with a 7" pitch prop.
Could that 1" diff in pitch make the Tohatsu that much faster then the Merc???????
Re: How can I increase HP in 2005 Merc/Tohatsu 3.3 hp
The Mercury and Tohatsu are the same except for the handle and the cover design. The 2.5 and 3.5's have a variety of differences including a different crankshaft and carburetor.
