I was just wondering how to do this. It doesnt work properly because I have to wiggle the shifter handle and get it into the right position to get it to start, so I was just going to bypass it.

Disabling the neutral start switch will eventually cause you to pitch someone overboard because you forgot to put it neutral before starting the engine. What do you suppose a lawyer will accuse you of? That switch is not a bank-breaker. At least look at it and see if it needs nothing more than tightening or adjusting.

Bad idea, my friend. Keep wiggling it or fix it.

To correct the problem properly, if you're using a standard white OMC control box, it's simply a matter of gaining access to the neutral saftey switch, loosening the retaining screws, then pushing the switch closer to the operating cam, then tighten those screws. Keep it in the cirruit.

i agree 100% with the others , and if the switch is working somtimes then you know that it is out of adjustment or ( like in my case ) the wires were lose on the switch, when you would wiggle the shifter they would make contact. i resolved this by tightening the crimp on the spade connector to assure a good fit. it has not failed on me in years since.

This is as close to my problem as a search came up with. My 90's 25 HP Johnson just clicks when I press the start button. My best guess is that it is the kill switch causing the problem. Any ideas on how to test this and or fix it?

Jetboy,
Feel free to start your own thread on this...

1st: Does your motor have pull start? Can you pull start it? If so, it's not your kill switch or the neutral safety switch....
2nd: What year is it?
3rd: When you push the starter button does the starter gear come up and make contact with the flywheel? Or do you just hear a clicking noise and the starter does nothing? Either way, take off all the connections from the starter and solenoid and starter switch and clean them really good with a brush and put them back on and try your starter button. Also, have you checked to make sure your battery is fully charged?

Usually, starter problems are bad connections or a battery with low charge.
