How big can I go?

The original motor was a 5.0 L, replaced by previous owner with a 5.7 L. I may be replacing it again, (at his cost!), so what is the limit on horsepower? Stern drive model # 985288

Well, it appears you're using an OMC Cobra. It'll pretty much handle whatever a stock 5.7L v-8 ca muster....

Just how much money is he going to sink into an 88 bayliner? Of course you probably don't care as lonag as the check are good...

Seriously though, if we are talking major upgrades in power, it is time to start talking about a different drive. Something in the DP or Bravo range.
