I've been looking for a long time for an early 80's 25' Tiara. Unfortunately, the nicest one by far that I have found has a stringer OMC outdrive in it. Anyone have any idea how big of a project it would be to replace this with something more current, such as a Mercruiser or Volvo? I've been warned by a few of you on this forum to stay away from the OMC stringer. Thanks!

It's a major refit, everything from controls to rebuilding the transom. The hole that OMC cut in the transom is tooooo large for anything else to fit in so the transom has to be replaced.

Some people take those boats, repair the transom, install an outboard bracket for twin outboards. It's not cheap either but...........It's an option.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I didn't see how to "subscribe to thread" when I initially posted this, and was off reading old threads in a search. I did run across this:

http://forums.iboats.com/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=24;gtid=1164897

Yikes!! I'd kind of like to stay away from twin outboards, as I'll be using the boat primarily for salmon trolling on Lake Michigan. It is a pain having to reach over and maneuver angry salmon around those big outboards while trolling.

I would stay away from the OMC drive.....unless you are mechanically inclined, have lots of money, and have time to work on them....trust me, I have twin stringer drives,,,,its always one thing or another with these things.....and i know of one guy who will work on them and he moved away...i'm on my own now...YIKES.....

Looks like you are over near where I will be doing most of my fishing, fendersfender. Anyways, I was just looking to get opinions on how hard and/or expensive of a job it would be to remove the stringer drive and replace with a Volvo or Mercruiser. Still sounds pretty unanimous that I should just get this crazy thought out of my head! Thanks again for the replies, all!

For what it is worth, I have a "White Boat Anchor". When I bought the boat it was attached to, it is working quite well even though while refurbing, it has become obvious the previous owner(s) performed little to no maintenance and corrosion control. The refurbing continues. ALL of the parts I have replaced so far have been available Via the Internet and quite reasonable from what I can tell. The Drive I am working on is a tad older, (mid 70's), but appears to be quite simple in design. Which is good for me because I am not a mechanic but I learn fast. If I had to hire an OMC mechanic to do what I am doing now, it would be cost prohibitive. I have no complaints about the drive, just the previous owner(s) lack of Ownership Pride. If something does happen to the intricate parts in the Upper Gear Case or Lower Gearcase in the near future, I would want to send it to a Good OMC mechanic. There are good recomendations on this board and others for leads to them. As time goes on, I suspect some of the more complicated problems I will be able to fix. Part of the adventure I guess. My biggest assets are a complete set of Repair Manuals, my want to learn and overcome, and this board and others like it. Hell, even the "Black Boat Anchors" help out quite a bit. So, the Peanut Gallery has spoken.

To repower to Mercruiser is a huge job. The transom conversion is a major structural repair. Then you have to go buy another donor boat that is Mercruiser powered. Then you have to rebuild everything. Then you have to manufacture, fabricate and retrofit a hundred things to make the install into your hull professional. Then you have to haul the donor boat to the dump. it's silliness to even consider. I would keep an OMC boat OMC. But my advice is to look for a different boat.
I have and love my 800 series. I also have amassed a huge cache of spare parts that were all collected for almost free. I have bought entire boats with freshly rebuilt drives and great running engines for under $150. I have six factory rebuilt engines in my shed which I got for a song. I couldn't resist. BUT...with All that said:
Unless you are already stuck with an OMC - don't buy one. DON'T.
Buy Mercruiser. The arrival on the boating scene of a $1200 brand new drive that has free shipping and bolts on and goes has made it rediculous to purchase an old boat powered by anything else.

I have a white anchor also, 79'. for its age and being a third owner of the boat it has been pretty dependable, only had to be towed off the lake only once in 5 yrs, I guess thats pretty good. I have had to learn how to work on them, I just hope none of the shafts that need shimming go out, shim tools are kindive hard to get. don't see them very often on e-bay. I would love to do the conversion but man alot of money and tons of work, my boat just isnt worth it. I just keep accumulating parts that I might need and keep this thing going. I wouldn't by another OMC though, I would deffinatly wait to get more cash for a black one or the penta,

LOL! I love it!

If it were not for Black Anchors... (Pro Mechanics choice of words, not mine) this board would have little activity. Haut... of all people... with an antique Black Anchor! LOL!

Hey man, buy the boat if you like it that much. Run the Stringer, and if the boat is all you hope it is, think about a retrofit later.

Hi! My name is Haut & I am a member of the "Black Anchor society"....
I spend alot of my time on "Dockside Chat" because I don't own an O.ther M.arine C.rap....
& therefore have plenty of time for other interests.....
Don't waste your time & money on outdated, bankrupt technology......
However, my next door neighbor has a beta max that would be perfect if you want to watch movies while on the boat....
Of course it willl have to remain moored in your driveway.....d:)......JK

There are several HELP groups out there for those seriously addicted to the stringrer drive.
It takes a lot of patience, effort, along with a large dose of reallity, but the stringers can be overcome.
Little steps at a time.........

Re: How big a project to replace OMC stringer outdrive?

Hey farginicehole2, I once had a 23' boat that I loved the style but had an OMC Electric Shift stringer. Well after the last straw that broke the camel's back, I decided to repower to Volvo. I've been asked many times to describe the installation, but my hunt & peck typing ability always stopped me. Anyway, I'll try to outline it here:
1. Make sure the rest of the boat is sound.
2. Make sure transom is at least 1.75" thick, 2" is better.
3. Use a carbide tipped straight bit router to make a 3 cuts around the exsisting hole.
a. first cut about 9" out around exsisting hole, a 1/3 of the way through the transom. Don't worry you won't be able to go all the way around on the bottom, just stop about a 1/2" from the rise of the boat bottom.
b. make a second cut 6" around the exsisting hole about 2/3 the way through the transom.
c. make a cut 3" around the exsisting hole all the way thought the remaining wood up to the inside fiberglass skin. Leave the inside fiberglass skin.
4. Take a chisel or what ever it takes to cut out these cut outs. When done, you will have sort of a 3 step hole around the exsisting hole.
5. take cardboard and trace out 3 patterns, transfer the patterns to 1/2" plywood (I used plain old CDX) and cut 3 plugs.
6. Use expoxy (I used West System with thickener to glue the plugs in and drove in some stainless steel screws to good measure
7. Then get enough fiberglass cloth to finish filling your hole and level the back of the transom. (I called West System and bought an end of a roll of biaxail cloth)
8. I purchased a brand new Volvo 5.7 with SX outdrive (you could probabaly buy used "Black Anchor" stuff cheaper but I wanted reliabilty). Follow installation instructions and your are ready to go.

I will say, make sure the transom is dry before you start the plug installation. I used a tropedo kerosene heater for 3 days to make sure mine was dry.

The plug you will make will be a 3 stepped cork if you want to think of it.

On my trial run I was scared as he?? the whole thing would come undone. But it didn't I knew the fix was good when I was caught 18 miles out on Lake Erie in 8-10' waves. Took me over 3 1/2 hours to come in at 6 mph. But it all held up.

Used the boat for 5 years then sold it to by my 28 footer II now run. But man I still loved that 23' footer.

Good luck
