Well, you never will get it all out. Does it hurt it in the long run? Ask the mechanics on here that live on the coast! lol Yes it does. But if that is where you live, what are you going to do right.

I have personally never had to deal with a salty, but have heard some horror stories. Freshwater only surrounding me.

If it was flushed after every run both INSIDE and OUT it shouldn't hurt it. On a good old mtr like that if it was mine, I wouldn't even think of running it in salt water.

Check my location.

i have no issues running in salt water with the oldies....they are built for it. would i leave a vintage motor tied to a dock in salt water all season? no! i run em, bring em home, gently hose them down, then flush in a barrel. end of season they get a good cleaning and stored inside.

Well lemme tell ya.... I fed, clothed and housed myself and my family on salt water motors for 24 years. Does it hurt motors? You betcha. You could flush them till the cows come home and you won't get the salt out of the screw threads. Electrolysis happens, and screws break when you try to get them out. And that is only one area where it happens. Try between the cylinder sleeves and aluminum block for an eye opener.

+1. You can run it in saltwater, just rinse, rinse, rinse and attach a sacrificial anode for good measure. Sure, the sea will win in the end, but you can get many years of enjoyment out of it.

Those old OMC motors were built for salt water use. All the parts are brass, aluminum or stainless steel. OMC did not even recommend flushing them. The motor is also from 1958...at this point you should have gotten fair use out of it. Run it and don't worry....

Yeah, average life of a motor run exclusively in salt water motor was around five years before disaster started showing it's ugly head. As Evinrude dealers, we gave people that bs about them being made for salt water---which was true, being state of the art and better than the competition. But I know the salt still did it's job. I was there and saw the results.

Yep, you've gotten 56 years out of it so far in fresh water. Can't live forever, can it?
