Well I have a temporary assignment running our small Houston office, at least three months, but I bet six. I am pretty excited as I could a little challenge, plus I am handing off Australia to new hires there. Anyway . . . the boss said he'd like me down there 2 or 3 days a week, no prah, I like that schedule, but then I got to thinking . . . That's a lot of $ in flights and hotels, and rent's kinda cheap around here, what if I could get a Lakefront condo or townhome  :D Boss said if it makes financial sense, do it. Kids are off for summer soon and all could join me for extended stays, and I can still fly home as often as I want, so I am struggling to find a real downside . . .

Well I have been checking prices around Lake Conroe, and it looks doable, even at Holiday rates in a small one; which would be OK. Now to my question. Our offices are off 290, basically about four miles outside of Beltway 8, I think they call it Cypress. I want a reasonable commute. The Conroe deal looks like I could get it down to 45 minutes, which is OK. Have I missed anywhere? Oh and why is Lake Houston comparitavely unpopular?

Last sales trip for the company this week before I leave for the new job. Cleaning out the home office, finishing up paperwork, and making notes for the incoming replacement whenever that will be. Just can't sleep....

First thing they said to me this morning (in Houston) was that I couldn't have coffee in my new office . . . :(

Anyway, yes, tommays, I actually do know the heat. Lived in Corpus (actually Portland) for a year when I was 10 and have spent time in San Antonio and a lot of work time here in Houston. I actually want my family to see other stuff instead of their comfortable little CA cocoon . . . give the boys a little Huck Finn type stuff, and show the wife what real heat is . . .

QC, I don't know Lake Houston at all but have spent some time at Lake Conroe. We've always had a good time at Conroe. It's not a huge lake but big enough for water sports and some crappie fishing. The kids would have a great time although it might be a culture shock for them coming from Ca.

Thanks LF. I went to Walden Marina on Conroe yesterday and really liked it. I am looking at a condo in April Sound, but just wanted to make sure I haven't missed a Lake that might be closer than Conroe or better . . . Have you ever been to Somerfield?

Lake Somerville? I love it there. Lots of wildlife, a pretty good lake and less crowded than Conroe. Trouble is, there's not much else around there close.

We spent 8 days there last year....it's where we evac'd to during Hurricane Rita.

Ooops . . . I meant Somerville. Doh! Yeah, I think I need some infrastructure surounding. Restaurants, freeways, Airport access etc. I will be coming and going if I pull this off, and the family a few times too. I'd do Galveston or Baytown, but our shop is on the other side of town, and I think it's just too far. Almost have Mrs. QC convinced that we need to cancel some summer stuff and do this. She's getting close . . .

Believe it or not I am thinking sailboat, and just getting that under our belt. Not sure they'll let me sell what we have, may be the toughest part for Mrs. QC . . . :( :) (Pretty cool how much she loves our current boat)

Cypress to Lake Conroe is do-able in 45 min. if you take the back roads. Up 249 through Tomball and Magnolia.
I think Lake Houston had a bad rap 10 - 15 years ago because of stumps and just nasty water. I think it has been cleaned up now and more boaters are returning. It seems like the boaters go to Conroe and the fishermen go to Houston.

Thanks Fishstick! That helps. Does the wind blow all summer at Conroe? Most every day? That is the impression I got . . .

Re: Houston help needed . . .

Sorry guys been away for a while.

Conroe is a nice lake, but it is VERY choppy, and overcrouded in the summers. Great party lake, just be careful. Dont expect to go fast or water ski during the day, just to choppy and crazy.

My brother lived in April Sound for several years, very nice place.

I dont know how traffic is, but I45 gets pretty stacked up sometimes. I cant help too much on the traffic planning. Look at real time maps at http://www.houstontranstar.org/ and click on speed charts. I45 slows to 20 MPH from 6:30 to 7:30.

Lake houston is OK if you know where you are going. LOTS of stumps. Also, fishing not too great, and it is polluted. A few years back there was a fishing ban due to pollution.

E-mail me at kenimpzoom at yahoo anytime. Or ask here.

Re: Houston help needed . . .

I think your best bet is lake conroe. Take the backroads like fishstik said and your commute wont be too bad.

Been a long time since I was on the lake (8 yrs or so), so my data is a bit dated.

Yeah, I figured out the backroads, and it works well. I also guessed on the chop based on what I saw. That's why I am thinking sailboat. I have wanted to teach the kids to sail (not that I have much experience  ). I am defintiely used to a party lake (Havasu) and know to try and stay out of trouble . . .
