Sure would like to here from people in Houston area, I have a business trip comming up in Feb. & want to take a few days vacation and enjoy texas fishing. Here at home in Onatario the water is frozzen + always read / hear about Texas fishing. I would like to stay within the Houston area to minimize travel. I read about Sam Rayburn, Toledo bend, lake fork & Caddo but as I do not know the area I am not sure how far they are from Houston. I certainly would not mind driving 1 1/2 -2 hrs for qualtity fishing, This will be a once in a life time thing for me.

Re: Houston fishing

Mike,
You named 4 great bass fishing lakes, but Rayburn is the closest to Houston at about 2 and a half hours.

here's a link to Texas lakes: texas parks & wildlife

or try State Parks within a hundred miles of Houston. It's a list of parks with or without lakes but might help you with the local geography.

Jan & Feb are our coldest months but if we get some sunshine it's not too bad for fishing. The best "once in a lifetime" experience fishing in Texas I could recommend would be hire a guide on Lake Fork, but you'd have to add a stopover at DFW to your itinerary & drive 2 hours. Best way to find a guide would be at www.texasfishingforum.com - get a recommendation from some of the members.

There's about dozen good lakes within 1.5 hours of DFW with some pretty good wintertime fishing for sandies & hybrids. I don't know if I could live up to that "once in a lifetime" thing, but you'd be welcome in my boat if weather & schedules & everthing works out.

It'd be a shame to come all this way from the frozen north & not get to wet a line - hope you manage to work it out.

Re: Houston fishing

Thanks for the info, I have looked up guides on texasfishingforum and sent off some e-mails. If I read things correctly on internet lake fork is about 250 miles from Houston while Sam Rayburn looks like 140 miles. While fishing one of these major spots would be something to talk about, I also just simply like bass fishing. So perhaps someone can give me some idea about the imediate Houston area. I read that Lake Houston is good just assume it must be close to Houston. However could not find any guide service listed.

Don't forget Livingston. Real good fishing lake.....we tear up the catfish there! Go every weekend and only about 1.5 hours from Houston.

Also, Lake Conroe is about 45 minutes north of Houston.

Re: Houston fishing

From my internet searching I am currently leaning towards Staying at Powell Park Marina & working through either Roger Bacon or Will Kirkpatrick as guide service. Anyone out there with experience in either of these. From the internet it looks like a 150 mile drive from Houston. It is the only site that I could find with both accomodations and guide service combined on Sam Rayburn. I seem to have settled on this lake as it appears to be the closest to Houston of the [3] major fisheries. Again all I know of the area is what I read on internet so certainly would appreaciate any first hand info.
