Houseboat on Lake Michigan

My question is can a houseboat go out on Lake Michigan. I would be located on the south side of the lake, Indiana. My interest would be to cruise up to places like Saugatuck, Holland MI etc. Are houseboats designed just for calm river water ?

Rhelmy,<br /> Depends on what type of houseboat you have or are getting.There are blue water boats.What does the lake get like?I've seen Gibsons on the mobile bay in alabama with the windows blown out from a wave.It all depends on the Mighty Mother Nature.Let me about your boat or what you are looking at. You could use one but doubtful you would be happy keeping one there. There may be a few days a year that the water conditions would be appropriate, and yes a bluewater might be ok, not good, ok on certain days. Just not enough boat in the water. I would shy away from that decision. <br /><br />Not a houseboat lake.

Any of the Great Lakes are like interior seas. They are just as dangerous too. A house boat, no way! You would need a protected bay or islands to be able to enjoy it on a large body of water like that.

Thank you for the information. I don't have a houseboat and I was inquiring about the decision. Based on the comments here and at a marina, I will not be heading this direction.

Please understand that the Great Lakes can be as, or more dangerous, as any body of water you can cruise. Lake Michigan is dangerous because it is a fooler. It can be as calm as glass, and before you know it, it blows up. Better to leave the houseboat cruising to inland lakes/reservoirs.
