Fellas,
what is considered a lot of hours on a I/O boat? Just wondering because next month i'm going to start looking for a nice used boat.
Thanks for any info!

Re: hours on a boat?

Always a tough question . . .

The fact is 1500 hours is very doable with good maintenance and consistent use. You can blow one up in 15 seconds if you want to, so I never know how to honestly answer this. In a car if you figure 35 MPH average 100K miles is 2850 hours. What does that mean? Nothing, but it might help confuse you . . . :p I think most boat buyers get nervous at 500 hours, but I am past that, do not use any oil and have not lost even 1/2 MPH in top speed. I am confident I'll go 1000, but again, very hard to answer considering all of the variables, and variable use.

Edit: I am moving this over to non-repair I/O discussions though . . . ;)

Ayuh,... An Hour Meter tells you little to Nothing about the motor....
A Compression, 'n leak down Test will tell ya the general condition of the hard parts...

2000/ 3000hrs is quite common before a rebuild...

Even if one boat has a hour meter that reads "high" the guy will tell you he left the key on a couple times till the battery went dead. Like people are saying, can't tell a lot by the hour meter. A water test drive would be a good thing to do as well. Happy hunting!

Thanks guys!
Ya, i guess an hour meter doesn't squat... And i guess a person could just unhook it the whole time they own it and hook it back up when ready to sell.. I hate dishonest people.... Arrgg....

My best advice, if you have this option. try to pick up a boat from someone you know.Also. You can hire someone to inspect a boat for you. they usually charge by the foot.
